The founder of an award-winning tourism company was identified as a pilot Troy Thomas, and one in two died in a helicopter crash in Broome.


A woman in her 20s and another 12-year-old was seriously injured during the accident and was sent to Perth for medical treatment.

While witnesses reported that they heard a loud explosion and the sound of the helicopter before the accident, sirens from a large emergency response could be heard in Broome.
Thomas founded the award-winning Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures company in 2006, but sold it to the tourism group Journey Beyond last year.
He was detained for a year as a manager, so he was still working with the company at the time of his death.
In March, he received an award on behalf of the company at the Australian Tourism Awards.
Friends, including sports commentator and former West Coast Eagles player Karl Langdon, went to social media to express their sadness.

Kimberley District Inspector Gene Pears said that accident and death had a significant impact on the local community.
“It’s not a great day for Broome,” he said.
“The accident had many witnesses, some may have heard something, some might have seen something.

“We are currently interviewing witnesses, but this will be really tragic for people in a small community, so many people will be impressed, many people will struggle.
“Please seek professional help and talk to each other and look at each other as Broome people do really well.”
Investigator Pears said that, as in most country towns, first responders would know what was involved in the accident.
While the investigation was still in its early stages, it was understood that the helicopter crashed shortly after take off.
He said the accident area was secured by the police while waiting for officers from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) to arrive.

Australian Tourism Export Council’s WA branch commented on Thomas’s death on social media.
“The Tourism Industry is grieving today with very sad news about Troy Thomas’ tragic death in Broome,” he said.

WA Tourism Minister Paul Papalia said that he was very upset about Thomas’s death.
“The Western Australian tourism industry has lost a valuable leader and a good friend,” Papalia said. Said.
Natasha Mahar, general manager of the Australian North West marketing body, said that Mr. Thomas is an iconic name for tourism in the region, and he is working tirelessly to put Horizontal Falls on the map.
“He was really a character of Kimberley and put all his efforts and efforts to make people really happy and make their days and give them an experience that they can’t find anywhere else in the world,” he said.
ATSB said that WA and investigators are mediating to investigate the wreckage and accident site.
