On Friday, police filed charges against Shehroze Chaudhry, 25, who operates under the name Abu Huzayfah al-Kanadi. He was charged under the country’s terror fraud laws, which was sentenced to a maximum of five years in prison.
What Shehroze Chaudhry claimed for
In 2016, Chaudhry claimed that he was a member of the religious police of the terrorist organization and went to Syria to join IS. He claimed on social media that he carried out at least two executions on behalf of the group.
Chaudhry gained more fame as the subject of the Caliphate, a New York Times podcast. He detailed the horrific murders of innocent civilians during the interviews.
After the podcast aired, parliamentarians expressed anger at Chaudhry’s free march. “When will the Prime Minister stop letting these bloodthirsty terrorists walk on our streets and instead put them in jail?” Conservative lawmaker James Bezan said at a parliamentary session.

However, doubts have since emerged as to the accuracy of their testimony. Several media outlets reported inconsistencies in Chaudhry’s later retelling of events.
“Deceptions can create fear in our societies and create the illusion that they are a potential threat to Canadians, but we determined otherwise,” said Christopher deGale, chief of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
“As a result, the RCMP takes these allegations very seriously, especially when individuals’ actions cause the police to enter into investigations where human and financial resources are invested and diverted from other ongoing priorities.”
The country’s terrorism fraud law is rarely used, and terrorist expert Amarnath Amarasingam believes that the RCMP will have trouble handling its cases in the courts, the police intended to instill fear in others, the information was false.
โI think this accusation creates an interesting dilemma for the RCMP and Huzayfah. Does he admit he went to Syria and faced a terrorist crime? ” He wrote.
In a separate release, federal police filed terrorism charges against a 30-year-old Alberta man. As part of a seven-year investigation, the police alleged that the person in question joined the Islamic State in 2013 and committed terrorist acts, including “deliberate kidnapping at or in connection with the terrorist organization’s manipulation”.
