Why Sergei Furgal arrested?

According to the Russian Investigation Committee, the country’s largest criminal investigation agency, Furgal is accused of interfering with the murders of several businessmen in 2004 and 2005.

According to the Tass news agency, the governor denied the charges.
Russian President Vladmir Putin will personally review the case against Furgal and decide whether to allow him to continue his duties as governor of Khabarovsk under Russian law.

According to the Investigation Committee, four of Furgal’s alleged accomplices were also arrested.

The arrest footage shown on Russian TV shows that he pulled the 50-year-old boy out of his car before calling and placing it in another vehicle surrounded by guards in military uniform.

Sergei Furgal Career

Before becoming governor in 2018, Furgal served as a federal deputy on the ticket for the Liberal-Democratic party for ten years. In 2015-16 he chaired the public health committee in the lower house of the parliament.
Liberal-Democratic party leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky criticized the form of arrest, arguing that there was no need to handcuff Furgal.
