Volunteers say that 74-year-old Paulette Thorpe died on Saturday evening of July 4 after being shot with a firearm at the celebration.
Officers responded with a gun reportedly injured 500 blocks of Burlington Boulevard at 11:00. and I found the victim.


Thorpe was transferred to the hospital, where he died soon after.
Officials said the fire was a result of the celebration fire and remained under investigation.
“While people in Durham last night peacefully celebrated the July 4th holiday with their friends and families, few people chose to risk our community by carelessly firing into the air. This reckless behavior led to the tragic death of Mrs. Paulette Thorpe. The death of Ms. Thorpe reminds us that as a community we must work together to prevent these meaningless actions, so no family will ever experience such a tragedy again, ”says Durham Police Chief Cerelyn Davis.
