Paul Pogba Why stopped Playing Full Story
Manchester United star Paul Pogba will reportedly stop playing for France following statements by French President Emmanuel Macron alleging that Islam is the source of international terrorism.
According to various Middle Eastern news sources, the World Cup-winning midfielder, who is a convert to Islam, ‘resigned’ following comments made by Macron on Friday.
Pogba also reportedly resents the French government’s decision to bestow the country’s highest honor on the teacher who had shown images of the Prophet Muhammad to schoolchildren in his class before he was killed in a terrorist attack.
Samuel Paty Attacked
Samuel Paty, 47, was attacked when he was returning home from the secondary school where he taught in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, 40 kilometers northwest of Paris.
He was awarded the French Legion d’honneur, the highest decoration awarded by the French state, in recognition of the fact that he died trying to explain the importance of freedom of expression.
Macron described the killing as an ‘Islamic terror attack’ that claimed the life of the French teacher, then added: ‘Unity and firmness are the only answers to the monstrosity of Islamist terrorism.’
Pogba’s resignation was posted on Sunday on the Arab sports website, which said the decision to give the professor the Legion of Honor and the comments were the reason for his decision to stop playing as a French international.
He said Pogba viewed the decision as an insult to himself and to French Muslims, especially since Islam is the second religion in France after Christianity.
Meanwhile, calls are increasing around the world for people to boycott French products in the wake of the president’s comments accusing Muslims of separatism and vowing not to give up cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.
School teacher Samuel Paty was beheaded on Friday October 16 by 18-year-old Abdullakh Anzorov.
Before his death, Paty had received threats after showing students in his class cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad on 6 October.
Mr. Paty had been teaching the children about freedom of expression. His death follows the 2015 terrorist attack on the office of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, which had published a cartoon of Muhammad on its cover. Twelve people died and 11 were injured by armed men.
French President Emmanuel Macron said at Paty’s funeral:
They killed him precisely because he incarnated the Republic. They killed him because the Islamists want our future.
They know that with quiet heroes like him, they never will. ‘
Paty, a history and geography teacher, had advised Muslim students to look away if they thought they might be offended before showing the cartoon to the class.
He has been posthumously awarded the Legion of Honor, France’s highest honor.
Anzorov, was shot and killed by the police after killing Mr. Paty.
In 2019, Pogba revealed why he converted to Islam, insisting that doing so has made him a better person.
When asked what it means to him to be Muslim on The Times ‘new Life Times podcast, Pogba said:’ That’s it. That is what makes me grateful for everything.
‘It made me change, to realize the things in life. I guess maybe it makes me feel calmer inside.
“It was a good change in my life because I was not born Muslim, although my mother was. I just grew up like this, respect for everyone.
“Islam is not the image that everyone sees, terrorism… What we hear in the media is really something else, it is something beautiful.
‘You get to know him. Anyone can find that they feel connected to Islam. ‘
