The man found dead Monday near Tecumseh is believed to be Mark Swarthout, a 56-year-old Beatrice man who had been missing since June 23, Johnson County Attorney Rick Smith said Tuesday.

Johnson County Accountant Rick Smith is believed to be 56-year-old Beatrice man Mark Swarthout, who was found dead on Monday near Tecumseh on Tuesday, missing from June 23.

Smith said that more tests will be done to confirm that the body has Swarthout and to determine the cause of death.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Steve Swarthout thanked everyone who helped call his brother in the past 12 days.
“Our investigation ended yesterday with our deepest regret. My brother joined his son Damon Swarthout in heaven,” he said.
Mark Swarthout was the service manager at his brother’s auto dealership Twin Rivers Chrysler Jeep Dodge.
On Monday, Smith said a corpse was found in a vehicle parked on a pasture road just outside of the US 136, about 4½ miles west of Tecumseh. The location was not visible on the highway.
Smith said the sheriff’s office contacted the Nebraska State Patrol to investigate. He said that more research led him to believe they were Swarthout.
