According to a federal complaint opened on Monday, US prosecutors charged two sons of former Panama President Ricardo Martinelli in connection with bribery and money laundering in connection with Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht.
Guatemalan police said that 38-year-old Luis Enrique Martinelli and 40-year-old Ricardo Alberto Martinelli were arrested for extradition to the US early in the day in Guatemala City while trying to fly to Panama.

A Martinelli family spokesperson did not immediately respond to his request to comment on the charges.
However, the family said after the arrest that he was working to ensure that the sons had legal assistance in Guatemala and that they could transfer the trial to Panama.
Odebrecht was at the center of a large Latin American corruption scandal uncovered in 2014, when the company paid more than $ 700 million of bribes to government officials in various countries.

The US Justice Department said that their son Martinelli was accused of mediating between 2009 and 2014 to bribe a senior Panama official from Odebrecht. .
The criminal complaint filed at the federal court in Brooklyn, New York on June 27, described the brothers as their “close relatives” without further details.

The complaint also claims that the couple managed secret bank accounts under shell company names to facilitate the payment of bribes through many transactions through US banks.
Former President Martinelli and his successor Juan Carlos Varela were banned from leaving Panama last week and are under investigation for money laundering in separate corruption cases.
