When a Christian mother raised a Christian family, it was a very difficult time for me. I was not ready to allow Kai to be socially transitional, especially at a young age. My inner struggle beat me every day. I felt I couldn’t resist everything I was taught to believe, and yet I couldn’t let Kai live in such obvious pain. I was not ready to face the fact that my one and a half year old child was a girl. This war lasted several years.

The family asks me if Kai, a Christian friend who is also a child psychologist, is gay: “Have you noticed Kai’s feminine behavior?” Contrary to the harsh accusations of others, it was a very kind question.

“I noticed, but I just figured out that it would grow,” I said. Now I can laugh at this. It is so clear that, in retrospect, this was not a transition phase. But when my friend asked me this, I was still not ready to accept it. As I continued to monitor my child’s progress, my friend started pointing at the red flags that showed something very real. He told me that there was something I should consider Kai being transsexual.

When Kai was 3 1/2 years old, I couldn’t ignore it anymore. He stated that he was a girl at least six times a day. Everything was this: “I am a princess” and “I am a girl.” Whenever he says something like that, I go down to his level and say, “No, you’re a child.”

It never worked. Waiting until he was in the middle of something and couldn’t chase him, he would fix me, then go into the room and say, “I’m a girl!” She shouted. and it has run out again. I have done everything I can think of to stop this kind of speech. Timeouts, there were too many timeouts. There were smacks, shouts and endless prayers. I contacted even the daily care that Kai attended and asked them to leave every “girl” toy. They followed that, but Kai never changed his tune. This child’s stubbornness and courage is something I’ve learned a lot.
