Calderone served 146 in the Strike Fighter Fleet (VFA). Ohio native joined the Navy in 2003. “Losing a fellow traveler is a tragedy,” Cmdr. VFA-146 commander Kevin McNatt said in the newsletter.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Chef Calderone’s family and his fellows during this difficult time.”

According to the Navy, Calderone experienced a medical emergency on July 2 and received immediate medical attention on board. The helicopter was transferred to a military health facility where it was landed and declared dead by a helicopter assigned to the Naval Battle Squadron 8.
Theodore Roosevelt was returning to San Diego’s main port when the emergency occurred. The carrier was deployed in January, but spent most of the spring in Guam and ultimately fought the carrier with an outbreak of COVID-19, which infects more than 1000 seafarers.
The newsletter notes that all staff at Theodore Roosevelt have been tested multiple times for COVID-19, and Calderone is constantly testing it negatively.

Officials said on Friday that the seafarer who died on Thursday after suffering a medical emergency at Theodore Roosevelt, located in the Pacific, was a Navy chief appointed to one of the ship’s striking combat fleets.
Aviation Electronics Technician Chief Officer Officer Justin Calderone was assigned to Strike Fighter Fleet 146 from Navy Air Station Lemoore, California, died around 5 July local time after being evacuated from the ship by an MH-60S Seahawk helicopter and on land military medical facility. The carrier operates in the East Pacific and was then around Pearl Harbor.
In a release of US 3rd Fleet officials, Calderone came from Ohio and joined the Navy in 2003. He won the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with the next four awards.
It is unclear what nature of calderone’s medical emergency is. Despite the ship’s positive test of approximately 1,300 ships sailors COVID-19 during the Navy’s biggest outbreak earlier this year, officials said the Calderone has been tested many times and is consistently negative for the disease.

The carrier was deployed from the main port of San Diego in late January and resumed on June 4, after a few months break to deal with the COVID-19 outbreak in Guam.
