Jon Shane, a criminal justice professor at John Jay College in New York, and former Newark in police captain New Jersey, said situations with people in the mental health crisis have made the police in a difficult situation.

He said the police were not trained by mental health professionals as well as mental health professionals.
“The police are left to do their best with the limited training they have,” said Shane. “They bring EMS with them and use certain words and a specific tone of voice when addressing people with mental health problems. Instead of armed authoritarians, they must present themselves as community carers.

“It would be ideal for mental health professionals to call 24/7 and respond to emergency situations with the police, but it is not,” Shane said. “And if a mentally ill person points a gun at an officer or a civilian and refuses to drop it, what should the police do?”
