Police Chief Amy Prock announced at a brief press conference that Hancher died on Sunday following the clash on Saturday, October 3, 2020. Hancher, 23, was in her first year as an officer in the Myrtle Beach Police Department.

Authorities say police called for a report of a domestic violence incident at around 22:00, and the officers fired mutually with an unknown suspect. The suspect was also shot and killed. A second officer was shot and injured, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), and was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

A department spokesperson told ABC 15 that Hancher was the first officer to be killed on duty since 2002.
According to SLED, the shooting was the first shot in South Carolina in 2020 to involve the 37th police and the Myrtle Beach Police. In 2019, there was a gun attack involving 45 police officers in South Carolina with someone involved in the Myrtle Beach Police Department.
