Myrtle Beach Police Officer Jacob Hancher was shot and killed while on duty while responding to a domestic violence call in the city of South Carolina.


Police Chief Amy Prock announced at a brief press conference that Hancher died on Sunday following the clash on Saturday, October 3, 2020. Hancher, 23, was in her first year as an officer in the Myrtle Beach Police Department.

What authorities say about Jacob Hancher

Authorities say police called for a report of a domestic violence incident at around 22:00, and the officers fired mutually with an unknown suspect. The suspect was also shot and killed. A second officer was shot and injured, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), and was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

Hancher had only been a police officer in the Myrtle Beach Police Department for one year, according to Prock, but had served in the department as a community service officer for four years.

What Lindsy Graham said about Jacob Hancher

South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham offered condolences on Twitter after Hancher’s death and shared Prock’s statement to the press. Graham wrote that he visited police officers in South Carolina the day before Hancher was shot and killed.


“I was in Myrtle Beach on Friday, talking to police officers. My prayers are with the family and friends of PFC Jacob Hancher, who was killed on the job, ”he wrote. Cops need our support more than ever. I’ve never had such a hard time being a cop.

A department spokesperson told ABC 15 that Hancher was the first officer to be killed on duty since 2002.
According to SLED, the shooting was the first shot in South Carolina in 2020 to involve the 37th police and the Myrtle Beach Police. In 2019, there was a gun attack involving 45 police officers in South Carolina with someone involved in the Myrtle Beach Police Department.
