A man identified by prosecutors as the leader of the Ku Klux Klan was brought to Richmond, Va. He was sentenced to six years in prison this week after he entered a group of Black Lives Matter protesters outside in his car.
What is the crime of Harry Rogers
Harry H. Rogers, 36, was convicted of six misdemeanors, including assault, property damage and hit-and-run charges, by a judge at the Henrico County District Court on Monday. Maximum penalty was given in each count.
Mr. Rogers is still facing three grave crimes for attempted malicious injury.
All the charges stemmed from an incident on June 7. No life-threatening injuries were reported, according to Lieutenant Matthew Pecka from the Henrico County Police Department. The Commonwealth’s Henrico County lawyer, Shannon L. Taylor, said three people were injured.

Mrs. Taylor described Mr.Rogers as “an acknowledged leader of the Ku Klux Klan and propagandist of Confederate ideology” in a statement. Despite the decline in organized K.K.K., according to the Anti-Defamation League, there is a consistent link between criminal activity and group in groups in the United States.
Authorities filed additional charges against Mr. Rogers in late June, including four attacks on hate crimes. Although the judge convicted Mr.Rogers of four assault charges without applying Ms. Taylor’s hate crime enhancements, Mr.Rogers received the highest sentence for each of the six charges he was convicted of.
What Judge Ruled about Harry Rogers
On Monday, Judge Thomas O. Bondurant Jr. of the Henrico General District Court ruled that Mr.Rogers did not target the demonstrators because of their race. Mr. Rogers’ lawyer had previously argued that hate crime remedies were not valid because the protesters were white, according to the station.
A District Court Judge found Harry Rogers guilty of misdemeanor assault charges and additional property crimes, but not the hate crimes that were later added.

George Townsend, listed as Mr. Rogers’ lawyer, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.
Ms. Taylor said that even if the persons with whom Mr. Rogers was injured were white demonstrators, it was necessary to increase the hate crime in the charges against Mr. Rogers.
“You were still picked for the race,” he said. “You were still deemed inadequate and inferior because 100 percent of the Clan said in their written material – and some of their ideologies – were less human.”
In some of the protests that erupted across the country since George Floyd’s death in police custody, there have been numerous instances where drivers hit demonstrators with their cars, causing serious and fatal injuries. In July, Summer Taylor from Seattle was killed when a car crashed into an interstate enclosure where a small group of protesters gathered.
In 2017, Heather Heyer was shot dead after driving James A. Fields car to counter-protesters at the “Join the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Va. Mr. Fields was later sentenced to life imprisonment.
