McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez described the killed officers as Edelmiro Garza, 45, and Ismael Chavez, 39. Garza had more than two years of experience, while he was an officer in the police department for more than eight years.
Officials said the two police officers were shot and killed by a suspect who hit him deadly in the South Texas border town after answering a local distress call on Saturday.

Officers first met with two people who reported the attacks that occurred around 15:30 in a nearby house on the south side of McAllen. Saturday, Rodriguez said. More details about Garza and Chavez’s in-home ailments were not immediately known. Rodriguez said the attack happened suddenly, and other police officers did not learn about the deaths of the officers until they arrived in the area later.

Texas Public Safety Department spokesperson Lt. Christopher Olivarez said DPS was one of the agencies that helped McAllen police on Saturday.

Olivarez stated that the DPS had sent troops to secure the scene after the McAllen Police Department requested assistance. He said his agency received a call about the incident at 16:30.

McAllen is located on the southern tip of Texas, approximately 113 kilometers west of the Gulf of Mexico.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton tweeted that his office will provide the necessary assistance to the McAllen Police Department.

Vicente Gonzalez, a US representative from McAllen, said it was “destructive” to hear news about the death of two officers.
