Drew Drechsel is an “American Ninja Warrior” competitor who was arrested Tuesday and charged with seekingwith a minor and inducing her to send him sexually explicit images, the Justice Department said.
Why was Drew Drechsel arrested?
According to the New Jersey District Attorney’s Office, Drechsel, who won the last season of NBC’s athletic competition show, was arrested at his Florida home. The official press release from the office details that Drechsel, 31, traveled to New Jersey to engage in sexual activities with a minor. The Florida native also encouraged the girl to send him inappropriate photos of herself.
Drechsel is being charged with manufacturing child pornography, inciting a minor to travel for unlawful sexual conduct, among other crimes.
Official documents say Drechsel and his victim met in 2014 at an event that was also attended by other American Ninja Warrior contestants. The two exchanged phone numbers and began texting each other. Drechsel invited the girl, who was 15 at the time, to her Connecticut gym, where they engaged in sexual conduct, the report details.
When the girl’s mother spoke to Drechsel about the incident, the report explains that the American Ninja Warrior star, then 26, “did not deny sexual activity, but instead stated that she did not know her age at the time.” Drechsel and the girl continued to meet several times after 2014. They continued to talk to each other until June 2019.
