Two white people in California were charged Tuesday with hate crime and other offenses after video appeared to show them vandalizing the Black Lives Matter mural on July 4, officials said.
The Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office identified the pair as Nicole Claudia Anderson, 42, and David Richard Nelson, 53, both of Martinez, Calif.

Diana Becton, district attorney, said, “The mural completed last weekend was a powerful way to convey the importance of Black life in Contra Costa County and the country.”
The mural was painted on July 4 in front of a courthouse in Martinez, a site chosen by the city when it issued permission for the organizer of the mural. Within hours of its completion, it was vandalized, said organizer Justin Gomez.
A witness saved a video
A video of the episode showed a woman using black paint and a roller brush to represent the letters “B” and “L.” to cover. She was approached by a man in a red cap and red shirt reading “Trump” and “Four More Year,” saying: “We are sick o
f this story” and “the story of police brutality, the oppression story, the story of racism. It’s a lie. It’s a lie. ”
The woman, using two expulsions, says to a “keep this” audience in New York, adding, “This is not happening in my home.”
The mural has been restored and residents were “keeping a presence” to prevent further damage, Mr Gomez said.
In addition to the hate crime charges, each face a felony charge of under $ 400 and possession of tools to commit vandalism or graffiti. All the charges are misconduct and no court date is scheduled, according to a spokesman for the district attorney’s office.
If convicted, the couple face up to a year in prison, the district attorney’s office said.

Separately, Martinez police said Tuesday they were investigating the illegal painting of “White Lives Matter” on a road elsewhere in the city.
