Bryan Bowlsbey has been married to Senator Tammy Duckworth for nearly three decades and the couple have two daughters. Like his wife, Bowlsbey served in the National Guard and was posted to the Middle East.
Duckworth was screened as a possible running mate for Joe Biden in 2020, but ultimately asked Sen. Kamala Harris to join the ticket.
According to Politico, Biden’s campaign took a closer look at Duckworth after he had a public confrontation with Fox News commentator Tucker Carlson. He called her “idiot” and “fraud” for suggesting that there should be a dialogue about the removal of the statues of the slave-owning founding fathers. Duckworth responded that Carlson should “walk a mile on my legs and then tell me if I love America or not.” Duckworth was seriously injured in a helicopter crash while serving in Iraq in 2004 and wearing prosthetic legs.
In interviews with CSPAN in 2005 and 2008, Bowlsbey explained that after his wife’s injury, friends and fellow military veterans approached to remodel their home in Illinois. Bowlsbey said they removed the walls and replaced the carpet with tile and hard floors to ensure Duckworth could move around without any problems, especially in cases where he needed a wheelchair. Bowlsbey said he also built a dock inside the garage so she could get in without help.

Tommy Duckworth Early life and education
L. Tammy Duckworth was born in Bangkok, Thailand, the daughter of Franklin Duckworth and Lamai Sompornpairin. Under long-standing US law, she is a natural-born citizen because her father is American. Her father, who died in 2005, was a veteran of the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps who traced his family’s American roots to the American Revolutionary War.
Her mother is Thai Chinese and originally from Chiang Mai. Her father worked with the United Nations and international companies in refugee, housing, and development programs, and the family moved around Southeast Asia. Duckworth became fluent in Thai and Indonesian, in addition to English.
Duckworth attended Singapore American School, the International School Bangkok, Jakarta Intercultural School (then known as Jakarta International School) for a few months her senior year in the class of 1985, and graduated with honors from McKinley High School in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1985 after her family settled in Hawaii when she was sixteen. She skipped 9th grade. Her father was unemployed for a time, and the family relied on public assistance. She graduated from the University of Hawaii in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and later received a Master of Arts in international affairs from George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs. Bowlsbey started his military career in the late 1980s. During his meeting with CSPAN, he explained that he knew that there was a risk of being killed abroad from the age of 20. He and Duckworth said they both understood this risk, but Bowlsbey added that staying home while his wife was on duty was not a scenario he never thought about until it happened.
Bowlsbey served in Iraq and Kuwait. According to the Department of Defense, Bowlsbey and Duckworth were Major in the Army National Guard. Both have since retired from the National Guard. Bowlsbey described himself as a “retired soldier” on Facebook.
