16-year-old Bradford student Aleema Ali was only 12 years old when the medicated shampoo she put on her hair caught fire and went up her whole head in flames.
She was burned on more than half of her body, lost seven of her fingers, and had to undergo hundreds of surgeries over the years to adjust.
Despite her horrific injuries, Aleema says her “confidence and self-love” are at an all-time high – and since then she has built a loyal fan base online sharing makeup tutorials with.
“In a way,” Aleema said, “I’m glad it happened now. It made me a better person. My self-esteem and confidence grew rapidly.”
In December 2016, Aleema returned from boarding school to find out she caught head lice and applied Full Marks Solution, a medicated shampoo to kill lice in her hair.
“I went to the kitchen to get the trash and when I passed my hair it was on fire because the medicine was extremely flammable,” she recalls.
“thought she was going to die”
Aleema admitted that she “thought she was going to die” when her whole head went up in flames.
“I panicked and was in shock,” said Aleema. “The only thing I could think of was ‘I’m going to die’.”
Aleema was rushed to the hospital and arrived about 10 minutes after the incident, where she was immediately taken to the intensive care unit.
“I was in a coma for two months, so there was no immediate response,” she said. “They slowly built up when I was awake.
Aleema suffered third degree burns on 55% of his body including his face, head, arms, chest, thighs, abdomen, back, and hands. She lost seven fingers and is currently unable to move two of her remaining fingers.
The teenager went through a long and painful recovery process over the years, with skin grafts, special clothing, and medication to help him adjust to normal everyday life after the accident.
She said, “My recovery has been extremely difficult and is ongoing. Every day I have to make nebulizers, humidifiers, compression garments, splits, creams, medications and much more.
“ I’ve had hundreds of surgeries already and I hope to have more in the future.
“Every member of the NHS has been so supportive of the hospitals I’ve been to, including Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Sheffield Children’s Hospital and Pinderfields.
“I’m doing very well internally. I was also told that my hair will not grow back, but miraculously. I can still lead a completely normal life. I can drive and do daily activities.
