Why Airan Berry arrested?

Prosecutors announced that a Venezuelan court sentenced two former US Special Forces soldiers to 20 years in prison for their role in a failed coast attack aimed at overthrowing President Nicolas Maduro.

Venezuelan attorney general Tarek William Saab admitted on Twitter on Friday that former Green Berets Luke Denman and Airan Berry were involved in the May 4 operation by a third former US soldier remaining in the United States.

Airan Berry accepted the fact

“THEY ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE FACTS,” wrote Mr. Saab, adding that the trial will continue for dozens of other defendants. He did not give details.

The operation, dubbed “Operation Gideon,” was launched from makeshift training camps in neighboring Colombia, with at least eight rebel soldiers killed and a total of 66 imprisoned. A former Green Beret named Jordan Goudreau, who runs a private Florida-based security firm called Silvercorp USA, claimed responsibility for the failed attack.

Luke Denman and Airan Berry admitted their guilty

Venezuelan prosecutors have announced that Mr. Denman and Mr. Berry, both former US soldiers, have been found guilty of conspiracy, illegal arms trafficking and terrorism.

On Venezuelan state television, the two men are widely displayed by the authorities as evidence of long-standing claims that the United States is committed to overthrowing Mr. Maduro’s socialist government.

The incident also revealed allegations by the US-backed opposition leader Juan Guaidó authorizing Mr. Goudreau to carry out the attack through an agreement signed by Mr. Guaidó’s two former political advisers.

Mr. Guaidó and US officials denied any involvement in the attack. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Washington will use all possible means to win the freedom of Mr. Denman and Mr. Berry.

The day before officials announced the convictions of two former Green Berets, Venezuelan officials launched the trial of six American executives of Houston-based Citgo company. Six people were arrested more than two years ago in Venezuela on corruption charges.

The trial lasted for months, until former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson met in person with Mr Maduro in Venezuela’s capital Caracas in July, demanding their release so that they could return to the United States.
On Saturday, Mr. Richardson said he would work to rescue convicted veterans, both Texas natives.

“Luke Denman and Airan Berry are American citizens and military veterans who deserve our support,” he said. “We will continue our dialogue with Venezuelans to find a way to bring them back to their families.”

Both cases continue amid hostility between Washington and Caracas. The Trump administration promised to overthrow Mr. Maduro by throwing its support behind Mr. Guaidó, who declared himself the legitimate president of Venezuela last year.

While Mr. Guaidó blames Mr. Maduro for the economic and social collapse of the once wealthy nation, socialist leader Washington says that Washington has manipulated Mr. Guaidó to steal the country’s enormous oil wealth.
